E-RISK: AN ENTERPRISE SIMULATION PLATFORM FOR RISK MANAGEMENT OF COMPLEX PROJECT MANAGEMENT ENVIRONMENT

Simulation is considered by many professionals the most suitable environment for measuringrisks of complex problems. However, simulation applications in construction projects are yet to achieveindustry consensus. Simulation models made for construction projects are generally made to solveisolated/single problems without addressing the uncertainty associated to the entire project’s life cycle atseveral project’s stakeholder’s levels. Risks and projects are not dealt with as a portfolio; thus, thecumulative impacts of risks on a portfolio of projects are not taken into account. Enterprises do not assessproject risks in an integrated environment which diminishes the value of the isolated simulated models tothe decision makers. The objective of this paper is to present the features incorporated into an underdevelopmentsimulation-based project risk assessment platform. The platform offers environment thatmodels and integrates complex projects into an enterprise scheme. The platform is designed with a visionto increase the appeal to simulation modeling by easing the modeling requirement and minimizing thecoding knowledge; to decrease resistance to simulation by allowing communication with legacy softwareto integrate with existing Information Technology infrastructure; and to separate between the modelingenvironment and the data storage platform allowing data analysis and decision making in separation fromthe graphical interface of the modeling platform.
