This paper looks at some aspects of the development of Civil Engineering in Canada from itsearliest days, particularly from the perspectives of both success and failure as the profession developed.The first “engineering” works in North America were carried out by our Aboriginal peoples in the buildingof settlements and in the development of basic transportation routes. Then the European “invasions”brought first the French and later the British Military Engineers. Much of the early work carried out bythese groups in the construction of defensive structures and improvements to transportation, particularlyin canal construction, were, despite their military origins, the earliest substantial works of Canadian CivilEngineering. By the early 1800’s Canada had started to develop “home grown” civil engineering expertiseand the profession grew rapidly from that point.A number of our historic sites and projects are reviewed with particular reference as to why some wereoutstandingly successful and others, despite showing great early promise, were failures.
