Geographical Diversification Strategies of Leading International Construction Firms: An Empirical Analysis

The global construction market is cyclic, dependant, risky, fragmented, and highly competitive. To survive and succeed in this market, contractors often choose to distribute their resources, capital and efforts over multiple country, markets to minimize their exposure to the harsh environment of the global construction market. Hence it is no surprise that geographical diversification strategies have been implemented by leading international construction firms for many years back across the world. However how to diversify geographic presences across multiple country markets to achieve optimal strategic effects is contingent upon many internal and external factors and is not very well understood. Through the analysis of cross-sectional data provided by Engineering News Record (ENR) and sampled top international construction firms, characteristics of their geographical diversification strategies are identified and the relationship between financial performance and geographic coverage is explored. Theoretically, the findings provide a better understanding of the geographical diversification strategies of leading international construction firms; practically, they provide international contractors benchmarking information and management implications to evaluate, formulate, or adjust their geographical diversification strategies.
