A generalized anisotropic inverse mechanics method has been developed for estimating the material parameters of the elasticity tensor C_(ijkl). It uses displacement and boundary force information and partitions the domain into piece-wise homogeneous subdomains. Testing for the linear, elastic case gave good results in indentifying material parameters and anisotropy. Testing for a nonlinear fiber model gave an excellent match on the anisotropic orientation for the homogeneous case. The inhomogeneous case leads to a good mean estimate but some regions have only one of the two normal C_(ijkl) parameters within acceptable values.
