This study focused on identifying effective thermal stress preconditioning protocols for inducing HSP70 expression for cartilage tissue engineering. Cell viability and HSP70 expression levels were quantified for several heating protocols. Cell viability remained high without alterations in cellular morphology for heating durations shorter than 8 min at 44°C. HSP70 expression increased with higher temperatures and for longer heating durations. However, additional stress preconditioning protocols should be explored and correlated with expression of other relevant HSPs, cell viability, cell proliferation, and formation of extracellular matrix such as collagen and aggrecan to develop optimization of heat stress conditioning.
