Oxygen levels experienced by cultured astrocytes grown under a column of media, as used in previous studies, are predicted to be near zero (Figure 1), suggesting this is an extremely poor model for studying the effects of hydrostatic pressure alone. Designs that allow for the separation of hydrostatic pressure and gas tension effects are feasible and will allow a more careful experimental study of the effects of pressure and hypoxia on cultured astrocytes.
