摘要

Modern shipbuilding is complex, with partners dispersed globally. Product data is the lifeblood of a ship’s DNA, yet itsconventional treatment often involves inefficient manual exchange, with significant impact at key stages, such as maingate, undermining shorter lead times, efficient collaboration and lower total cost of ownership. This weakness isunsustainable when transparent access to reliable, accurate data is as important in through life support as in the designand build phase.This paper advocates a compelling remedy: product development based on creating and managing a single set of productdata—or “a single source of the truth”--that can be exploited throughout the ship’s life. With this approach, data that’sgenerated and captured during design and build can then be applied to reduce through life costs. This form of realproduct lifecycle management (PLM) can deliver tangible business value, including:1.Secure control of data2.Shorter time frames3.Lower total cost of ownership (TCO)4.Lower risk based on better, earlier collaboration5.Man hour savings due to reduced rework of design informationConnecting the traditionally disconnected worlds of design and through life support is objectively desirable for thefuture health of the industry.
