Corrosion damage is one of the main elements which cause structural failure. In shipping, the "corrosion addition" method is widely adopted to prevent structural capacity degradation. In this study, three types of standards or rules based on corrosion addition models, including historic corrosion rules (pre-CSR), common structural rules (CSR), and harmonized common structural rules (HCSR) are considered and compared with two other corrosion models - one suggested by the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) and the Paik corrosion model. To identify the general trend in the effect of corrosion damage on the ultimate strength performance, the corrosion addition rules are applied to four representative sizes of double hull oil tankers - Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax and VLCC.
