Product data contains one of the most valuable assets of a company - Intellectual Property (IP). Its protection is imperative in today's distributed and globalized industrial environments namely shipbuilding and shipping. Intellectual Property Protection needs to take place at different levels in an organization including company culture, processes, legal, infrastructure, and on the information level itself. Measures taken at these levels are complementary and need to be implemented entirely to ensure a company's assets remain save. This paper addresses IT related aspects of the story related to the infrastructure and information level. The requirements are addressed, state-of-the-art and available solution approaches are discussed and an overview is given on solutions available on the market. Company CIOs and IT security officers need to think about intelligent ways to avoid information leaking and misuse without blocking the intended flow of information - thereby applying the need-to-know principle to ensure 3rd-parties get and only get what is really required to meet their requirements in the ship development and operation processes.
