A CONTRIBUTION TO SCENARIO BASED SHIP DESIGN

The design of a ship is regularly performed based on the owner's specification of the required operation condition including the main operation speed, payload capacity and e.g. the operational range. This approach can result in an ineffective ship operation as the vessel will not operate at its designated design speed and loading condition for large periods of its operating time. Furthermore by using this approach it is not possible to react to unexpected events (economical crisis, etc.) and its consequences (e.g. slow steaming) in an appropriate and effective way and to cope with off-design conditions. In this paper a design approach will be presented which uses scenario methods to develop a detailed service profile considering economic and ecological constraints and the vessels operating profile as well as the possibility of uncertain events like economical crisis. This profile being represented by an n-dimensional cumulative distribution function will be used as the basis for the development of an optimal ship design with respect to life-cycle costs.
