Traditionally, shipyards have developed their own materials management solutions. However, as more and more shipyards are taking on offshore projects, they often encounter specific materials management requests that are utilized by traditional EPC companies, which are often driven by owner requirements. Therefore, there is a need to handle the multitude of new requirements when working with multiple EPCs and owners, while simultaneously maintaining the flexibility for materials handling within the shipyard. This is a critical focus area as 60-70% of vessel costs are related to materials management, and establishing an efficient and effective materials management system will positively impact the bottom line. This presentation will explain how several shipyards have successfully implemented materials management systems to provide flexibility while decreasing material costs.
