Enrichment of Silver at the Gold Layer of Gilt Silver Embroidery Wires of Qaaba Curtains

The deterioration of metal threads occurs because of the environmental conditions and also because of the contact with textile fibers. The main corrosion products of gold gilt silver threads (e.g. wires, strips) are silver sulphide (Ag_2S) crystals grown on the gold coating surface in flower-like shape. The formation of Ag_2S by the corrosion of silver based historical objects is previously documented. In gold coated silver electronic products, diffusion of silver and its enrichment at the surface of gold coating layer produced silver sulfide when the gilt layer was contaminated with sulfur and heated by the passage of current. It is reported that sulfuric atmosphere and temperature accelerated the silver diffusion process. The present work is the first communication about silver enrichment towards the outer surface of gold coating on gilt silver wires. The formation of Ag_2S corrosion products are visualized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). In addition to this technique, Raman spectroscopy is used to identify the corrosion products on the gilt layer surface. The enrichment of silver towards the gold layer outer surface is investigated by using Field Emission Electron Microscope and concentration profiles of silver, sulfur and gold in gold layer were obtained. The results showed that silver sulfide crystals were present at the surface of two gold gilt silver wires dating from 16th century but not at the surface of two wires dated from 18th and 19th centuries. However all the gold layers on four wires investigated contained sulfur. Wires dated from 16th century exhibited silver enrichment near the outer surface of gold coatings. The presence of sulfur in gold layer may be related to its production method. However diffusion of gold in silver and diffusion of silver in gold is related to the heat used during the production of gold gilt silver wires.
