摘要

"One can wonder — so nature expresses the climatic environmental impacts in the demonstration of flora and fauna, plants and trees, the basic rule that only organisms survive which are in equilibrium with their internal and external environmental forces — architecture should react in a similar way; working with nature and with it express a truly regional architecture ". -Victor Olgyay, 1955The diversity of natural forces acting on architecture results in a wealth of ideas and forms. Identifying nature's forces and the resulting forms, and incorporating these formal designs into buildings develops environmental architecture morphology. Through application of such morphology, we may positively engage nature; we can design our built environments to gracefully fit, minimizing negative impacts and maximizing beneficial effects. This is not biomimicry, (emulating nature), or biophilia (implying an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems). Environmental morphology focuses on nature's forces creating form. Non-living aspects of environmental systems are often used in passive design to moderate and better utilize nature. Indeed, the morphology of environmental forces may be considered the science that gave birth to passive solar design principles. This paper seeks to better formalize this morphology, through generative approach to the subject.D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson outlined the morphological approach in his 1917 text "On Growth and Form", showing the roles of physical laws and mechanics as the fundamental determinant of form and structure. This study expands this application to the realm of ecological architecture. While biological material and patterns can be integrated directly into our structures for a variety of beneficial results, here we will focus primarily on the abiotic, or non-living aspects of nature. Perhaps most significantly, we can design structures with characteristics that respond to the forces of natural systems thereby synergistically integrating with them.
