Bioleaching processes were used to mobilize metals from electronic scrap (printed circuit boards - PCBs). The bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxi-dans (A. ferrooxidans) and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A. thiooxidans) isolated from an acidic mine drainage were grown and acclimated in presence of PCBs and then used as bioleaching bacteria to solubilize metals from PCBs. Optimum conditions were: pH 2.3; temperature, 35 °C; and ferric iron concentration in the range of 0.004 to 0.02 M. The energies of activation were determined to be 11.7 heal (ca. 4.8×10~4 J) per mol. It is concluded that A. ferrooxidans and A. thiooxidans were able to grow in the presence of PCBs and the mixed culture of A. ferrooxidans and A. thiooxidans can not only efficiently bi-oleach the main metal copper.
