Going the long way – an analysis of the world’s ultra long-haul non-stop air routes

摘要

The demand for intercontinental travel has been steadily growing in the past decades. Newaircraft models were capable of flying higher payloads over longer distances, eliminating theneed for refuelling stops. With the advent of the Airbus A340-500 and the Boeing 777-200LR, city pairs with longer distances than ever in history before can be served with nonstopflights. The number of routes with a length of more than 12,000 km has risen ten-foldfrom 5 to 52 since 2003 and, with further ultra long-haul aircraft to be delivered in the nearfuture, further growth in this area can be expected.The paper provides an overview on the technological prerequisites for the development of thisrelatively new market segment and analyses the commercial and environmental challengesassociated with ultra-long haul services. A particular focus is laid on the operation of AirbusA340-500 and Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. The developments on the world’s ultra-long haulmarkets between 2003 and 2010 are analysed and with the help of data provided by OAG andMIDT, the potentials for future services are estimated.
