The effects of short-time low night temperature on proline, malondialdehyde ( MDA ) content and antioxidative enzymes were studied in wild tomato LA 1777 ( Solanum habrochaites ) and cv. Moneymaker ( S. lycopersicum) leaves. Seedlings with six fully expanded true leaves were moved in different climatic controlled-environment chambers where dayight temperature regimes were 25/15°C, 25/9 °C and 25/6 °C for 12h, respectively. The results showed that proline content and POD activity increased at 9°C and 6°C in two genotypes. The variation range of proline content and POD activities in LAI777 was greater than in Moneymaker; SOD activities at 9°C and 6°C in LA 1777 decreased during the first 9h and then increased, but increased in Moneymaker than control level after low night temperature treated; CAT activities changed slightly in two genotypes under low temperature. The increased content of MDA in leaves of Moneymaker was more than in LA 1777, indicating the enhanced membrane lipid peroxidation in Moneymaker. Therefore, the coldresistant tomato might depend on exerted higher level of POD activity and proline content to acclimate to chilling stress.
