we seek to draw inspirations from known physiological phenomena of the human visual system (HVS) to develop engineering systems for image processing. Combining multiplicative adaptation and simultaneous contrast mechanisms of the HVS in a simplified computational model, we have developed a practically implementable system that processes images in the spirit of some aspects of multiplicative adaptation and simultaneous contrast. We show that the model adapts to local background luminance levels, preserves and enhances local details, and is potentially a useful model for rendering image for high quality display.
