During our investigation, exposures to 1-BP were measured that were greater than five times the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for 1-BP. We believe that work practices, such as manual loading and unloading of clothes into the machine, and leaks resulting from the incompatibility of 1-BP with rubber gaskets and possibly even Viton gaskets, contributes to these exposures. Our investigation found that significant exposures can occur to 1-BP during the introduction of solvent to the machine, maintenance of the machine, unloading and sorting of cleaned clothes, interrupting the wash cycle of the machine, and the use of 1-BP aerosol for spot cleaning.
