摘要

The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining fluid homeostasis. It is responsible for the uptake and return of large particulates and extravasated proteins from interstitial spaces to the venous system. Its dysfunction could result in extracellular edema [1]. It also plays an important role in the immune system and is often the route of metastasis for certain types of cancers. Lymph may be propelled by active (intrinsic) contractions of lymphatic smooth muscle. These contractions have been shown to result in fluid velocities of up to 10 mm/s [2] and can result in large diameter changes of more than 50% [3]. Nitric oxide (NO), a known vasodilator of the vasculature, is present in high concentration in lymphatic vessels.
