These studies reveal a role for collagen in sex differences in RV function and PA hemodynamics in response to hypoxia-induced PH and recovery. The gene defect in collagen degradation increases the adverse impact of hypoxia on pulmonary vascular remodeling in females, in line with the multiple-hit theory of PAH development in women [8]. In contrast to the adverse effects on female mice, recovery from chronic hypoxia is beneficial to male mice of both strains. The collagen accumulation in TG male mice seems to slightly positively influence RV function but negatively influence PA hemodynamics.
