Comparison of Corrosion and Cavitation Erosion Behaviors between the As-cast and Friction-stir Processed Nickel Aluminum Bronze

An as-cast nickel aluminum bronze (NAB) was treated by friction-stir processing (FSP). Immersion test up to 82 days was carried out to investigate the long term corrosion behavior of the as-cast and as-FSP NAB. The polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were also measured to investigate the corrosion behavior of short term under cavitation conditions. Mass loss measurements and surface morphology observations were conducted to investigate the cavitation erosion behavior for the as-cast and as-FSP NAB in both distilled water and 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution. The immersion test indicated that the impedance of the as-FSP NAB was much higher than that of the as-cast one. In distilled water under cavitation condition the cumulative mass loss of the as-cast NAB were about 1.5 times as large as that of the as-FSP one. In 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution the mass loss increased greatly for the as-cast NAB while slightly for the as-FSP one. The higher corrosion and cavitation erosion resistance for the as-FSP NAB was attributed to its modified microstructure. Under cavitation condition, the coarse-grain and inhomogeneous microstructure of the as-cast NAB caused severe phase boundaries damage and the great mass loss resulted in large and deep cavities.
