With the development of new composite floor layouts and increased spans, understanding damping mechanisms of floor vibrations has now become an important field of interest. In this study, timber beams were subjected to flexural vibrations by using the impact test method. Experimental modal analysis was used to process the damping ratio out of the frequency response function measurements. Measurements were performed on 11 solid wood beams and 11 glulam beams, both made out of Norway Spruce, whose sections were representative of common timber floor structures. General trends showed increasing damping ratio for higher modes, shorter spans, and edgewise orientations. It was finally concluded that the damping ratio was governed by the shear deformation related to each specific mode shape.
