For nearly a year, several specialists from Geo-Energie Suisse analyzed and interpreted the data from the geothermal project and the earthquake of November 2017 in Pohang. These studies, requested by the permitting authorities of the Canton Jura shortly after the Geo-Energie Suisse had informed them, established that the very high-pressure water injections made in the vertical borehole probably played a decisive role in triggering the earthquake within a nearby fault. However, the relative contributions of human and natural causes cannot yet be definitively determined, because the Pohang region seems to be seismically active, especially after the 9.0 M mega-earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan in March 2011. Key differences in the project concept, implementation and geological context of the Pohang project compared to the Haute-Sorne project are important. In view of these results, Geo-Energie Suisse concludes that the multi-stage stimulation concept of the Haute-Sorne EGS project and the accompanying safety measures defined in the permit remain entirely valid to prevent a scenario such as the one in Pohang from occurring.
