Polymerization of propylene oxide (PO) have been carried out by using nano-sized double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst prepared by reacting ZnC12 and K3[Co(CN)6]2 in the presence of tert-butyl alcohol as a main complexing agent (CA) and various polymeric co-complexing agents such as poly(tetramethylene ether glycol), polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, poly(ethylene oxide),aipoly(propylene oxide), afpoly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer EO20PO68EO20 (PI23), and hyperbranched polyglycidol. The resulting DMC catalysts are characterized by elemental analysis, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, x-ray powder diffraction, electron microscopy. The structure of DMC catalysts with an average size ranging from 183.3 nm to 294.2 nm changes from amorphous to crystalline based on the co-complexing agent used. All catalysts show high polymerization activities depending on the type of co-CA and polymerization parameters. Nano-sized DMC catalysts produced polyether polyols with ultra low unsaturation level (0.00151-0.00318 meq./g), high molecular weight (6000-6600 g/mol), narrow molecular weight distribution (1.08-1.26), and low viscosity (384-600 cP).
