Since the early nineties, numerous dam safety studies have been undertaken in many countries around the world to identify spillway inadequacies on dams as a result of revised hydrological conditions and updated safety standards. These studies have often revealed that a large number of dams are unable to satisfy modern dam safety standards and must be upgraded to handle floods larger than they were originally designed for. On projects presenting significantly undersized spillways, the most feasible solution might involve adding a new auxiliary spillway designed to supplement the existing spillway in case of extreme floods. Two major dam safety remediation projects involving a solution with Fusegates to control the new auxiliary spillway present a good example.
