Seitevare dam is one of the largest dams in Sweden. It has an extensive monitoring system for measurements of seepage, pressure and temperature using conventional sensors. The dam is also equipped with optical fibers for temperature and strain measurements. During the filling season 2010 a particular study of the dam performance was carried out. An extensive monitoring program was initiated in order to extract as much information as possible from all sensors. In order to better understand the behavior of the dam FEM-simulation were used to simulate seepage flow and heat transfer in the dam. The combined information from all measured data for two years (flow, head and temperature) provided the needed input data. Simulations were then made for the subsequent year, and the result could be compared with measured data. This approach of using temperature simulation was found useful and improved the understanding of the seepage regime in the dam.
