The Son La Hydropower Plant Project is located at the Da River in northwest Vietnam. The total installed capacity of the Project is 2,400 MW and the expected annual energy production is 10,246 GWh. The Project is aimed at power generation, flood control and water supply, and socio-economic development. The dam is of the concrete gravity type of 138 m in maximum height and 962 m in crest length, and was constructed with RCC (roller compacted concrete) and CVC (conventional vibratable concrete). The spillway is a gated open type, with surface and bottom gates for a design discharge of 38,200 m~3/s. The power intake and waterway were constructed for six lanes of penstock in and on the dam. The powerhouse at the toe of the dam is an open type, which houses six units of Francis turbines of 400 MW capacity. The volumes of RCC and CVC placed for the Project were 2.7 million m~3 and 2.1 million m~3, respectively. Construction in the Project was commenced in March 2004 and the commercial operations of the first unit of 400 MW capacity were successfully started in December 2010.
