Rejuvenating agents are surface treatments that have been developed to remedy the detrimental effect of ageing close to the exposed surface of asphalt surface courses. The rejuvenators are claimed to restore ductility and adhesion properties of the binder, by adding lost components or by modifying the chemistry of the aged binder. These treatments could have benefits in extending the life of the surface course and reducing the need for maintenance and the associated environmental impact. Rejuvenators are finding wider use but so far there is no standard test by which to measure or predict their effectiveness. A test program, to measure the rejuvenating effect and the durability of the treatment, and to develop a specification procedure, has been undertaken by TRL Ltd for Defence Estates. This paper reports the results of a study of rheological properties of bitumen recovered from rejuvenated Marshall asphalt. The comparison of the master curves of treated and untreated, old and newer bitumen showed that the rejuvenating agents did not produce a significant softening of the aged bitumen. Further studies are required to understand whether the rejuvenators influence other properties of the asphalt mixture as a whole rather than just those of the bitumen.
