Unique Range Performance Properties of Electric Aircraft

Aircraft equipped with an electric propulsion system feature unique range performance properties. Range performance topics dealt with include basic properties in terms of maximum-range cruise in zero wind cruise as well as the effects of head- and tailwinds. It is shown that range performance properties of electric aircraft differ considerably from those of comparable vehicles with an air-breathing propulsion system. It turns out that electric aircraft can show significant performance advantages. Analytical solutions of the range performance problems are derived so that results of generally valid nature are obtained. This is supplemented by computational results used as exemplary cases in order to provide a quantitative insight.
