Since Korean upland fi elds are sloping, and higher amount of fertilizer and pesticide are appliedcompared to paddy fi elds, uplands are found to be one of the major NPS pollution sources.The dominant soil type of Korean uplands is loamy and the agriculture is practiced in 7 -15%of slope areas. The hydrologic soil group is “B”. The common sizes of uplands were between0.1ha and 0.2ha, and 86.2% of them accounted for less than 1.0ha. In this study, the generalcharacteristics of the Korean uplands were investigated. Based on the investigation fi ndings,the vegetated fi lter strips (VFS) were considered as a measure of reducing NPS pollutionsfrom uplands, The effects of VFS systems on reducing sediment loads were assessed by usingVFSMOD-W. The simulation study was conducted for 0.1ha, 0.5ha, and 1.0ha of uplands with7% and 15% of slopes with different type of shapes designed for the VFS system evaluations.Simulated daily rainfalls of 20mm, 40mm and 100mm were considered in the model. Thecalculated sediment loads ranged 29~101kg/ha, 2,592~9,160kg/ha, 26,340~123,000kg/hafor the 7% slope, and 69~360kg/ha, 6,603~32,840kg/ha, 60,110~429,700kg/ha for the 15%slope of uplands from the 20mm, 40mm and 100mm rainfalls, respectively. After applying VFSsystems, no sediment generation was obtained from 20mm rainfall for both 7% and 15% slopesof uplands, while the simulated sediment loads ranged 0~4,169kg and 9,282~80,870kg/ha forthe 7% slope and 28~25,140kg/ha and 34,390~298,440kg/ha for the 15% slope from 40mmand 100mm rainfalls respectively.
