Mineral accumulating along the enthesis is more aligned with the tendon-bone axis than tendon, even in regions where the collagen lattice is markedly disorganized. Further, the size of mineral crystals increases nearer the bone. Although the details of the accommodation of mineral by collagen are uncertain, the data are consistent with a tissue system that focuses forces into a tough, compliant region.
