With the aim of producing nickel (Ni) metal directly from acidic aqueous solution containing cobalt (Co) and other impurities, selective reduction of Ni was examined. As a preliminary experiment, sodium hypophosphite monohydrate (NaH_2PO_2·H_2O) was selected as a reductant, and reacted with aqueous solution containing 0.1 mol L~(-1) nickel sulfate (NiSO_4·6H_2O) and 0 ~ 0.05 mol L~(-1) cobalt sulfate (CoSO_4·7H_2O) for 3 hours at 90 °C. As a result, it was revealed that Ni was selectively reduced and separated from Co in the acidic region (pH = 4.8). In this study, differences of reduction behavior between Ni and Co were investigated, and the feasibility of Ni / Co separation by the selective reduction of Ni was discussed.
