摘要

In the spring of 2013 I had the chance to visit the Nereidas Valley, located on the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in the Colombian Andes (Figure 1), where the Dewhurst Group is performing exploration for Colombia's first geothermal project in conjunction with our client who is a South American utilities company, EPM. While not an engineer or geologist, I was brought in as part of the feasibility study for a specific purpose: to evaluate what the impact of the project would be on the local community. My expertise is in the Sociology of International Development, a field saturated with theory, but lacking in practical experience and applications. However, what social scientists such as myself do possess are research skills and training that can be used to gather information in a comprehensive, scientific, and objective way, using proven methods and techniques for social impact assessment (Becker 2014; Vanclay 2006). Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is common practice for other industries such as mining and hydroelectric, which have historically caused many problems for local populations (Egre 2003; Joyce 2001).
