Some fairly simple and relatively inexpensive modifications and additions to common geotechnical investigations can lead to substantial improvement in the characterization of unsaturated soil sites. It is not always absolutely necessary to directly measure soil suction as a part of routine characterization of an unsaturated soil profile. However, it is necessary to be mindful of soil suction as a key stress state variable controlling the behavior of unsaturated soils. In particular, performance of response to wetting tests aids in the identification of potentially problematic moisture sensitive soils and to the development of cost-effective geotechnical engineering solutions.
