This paper presents a current sensor-less boundary current mode PFC converter. In particular, the ac-dc converter with a boundary current mode control has the following several advantages. One is that it has the capability to achieve the low input current distortion and the unity power factor can be obtained in theory. Another is that it is possible to reduce the switching loss because the inductor current is zero when the switch turns on. The conventional boundary current mode requires the detection of the inductor current using the detection resistor which causes power loss. In the proposed method, the zero-crossing point of the inductor current is predicted by solving the circuit equations. Therefore, it is unnecessary to detect the inductor current. It is able to eliminate the current detection resistor; it contributes the higher power efficiency. As a result, the proposed method operates under the boundary current mode in the steady state and the excellent power factor characteristics and lower total harmonic distortion are obtained without current detection.
