EPA has been slowly rolling out its planned regulation for methane emissions from oil and gas operations since 2013. In January 2015, EPA released the most detailed plan yet for its proposal, due Summer 2015, of how it will regulate these emissions. EPA appeared to make concessions to industry by focusing on new sources in the short-term. However, it likely will still regulate a significant number of new sources via old tools, and its long-term goals could not be more clear. By focusing on methane emissions, and not VOC, EPA is clearly focused on the long-term target of regulating existing sources of methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.
