This paper proposes a novel topology for a transverse flux machine (TFM) to address the three major issues associated with conventional TFM, namely: multi-stack poly-phase TFM, low power factor and difficulty in construction. The proposed machine has homopolar main field flux set by the rotor and a hetero-polar winding arrangement on the stator. Design equations and equivalent magnetic circuit model of the proposed topology are presented in this paper. The machine is analyzed both by using equivalent magnetic circuit approach and three dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). Results obtained by both the methods are compared.
