Lime is a traditional construction material, mainly composed of calcium oxide (CaO), calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)_2, and magnesium oxide (MgO). It is derived from the calcination of limestone and has been used for construction since ancient civilizations. Through the years, the construction industry has sought to improve the chemical and physical properties of lime to boost the durability and mechanical behavior of the material, and consequently increasing the service life of buildings. However, its use has been declining, and favoring of the use of Portland cement mortars. The latter shows adequate properties, but its manufacture releases high doses of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This research focuses on the use of mineral admixtures to improve durability of aerial lime paste with the intention of increasing its use in masonry works. In addition, it proposes an alternative material to reduce some of the use of Portland cement mortar in construction sites. In this research, the research team tested different admixtures with slaked lime mixture to observe the behavior of the new material. A total of eight mixtures were prepared. A constant volume of aerial lime paste was used with the following admixtures: river sand, fly ash type F, brick powder, and nylon fiber. Two types of tests were performed. The first was the capillary absorption test using an adapted version of ASTM C1585-13, and the second test was performed to verify the compressive strength using ASTM C109. The results show significant improvement of the mechanical properties and durability of aerial lime paste with mineral admixtures. These combinations provide an environmentally friendly construction material that can be used in masonry works. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by increasing the understanding on the use of mineral admixtures in aerial lime as an ecofriendly alternative to Portland cement mortars.
