The existing UPRR Bridge 24.75 on the Sioux City Subdivision consisted of a four span (45'-90'-60'-45') bridge across the Monona Harrison Ditch just north of the mouth of the Little Sioux River. The afternoon of August 19, 2015, UPRR got the call that their bridge had washed out. The call came in time to stop the next train and prevent a derailment. The main river pier had fallen and the center 90' and 60' spans were partially submerged. UPRR immediately mobilized crews and emergency response teams to the site. By mid-afternoon on the 20~(th), the 90' and 60' spans were removed with a plan in place to replace the fallen bridge with a new 5-span structure that would utilize the existing abutments. OCCI would construct innovative pipe pile bents with precast concrete caps incorporating materials that were immediately available. OCCI, Inc. began mobilization on Aug 22~(nd) to move crews and equipment to the site. UPRR had possession of the 3 long spans and procured the 2 new custom short end spans that allowed for significantly reduced loads on the existing abutments. The two new river bents were the most challenging, and constructed utilizing two 300-ton crawler cranes (one on each river bank). The two end bents were constructed by UPRR forces using a locomotive crane on each end of the bridge. The first train crossed the new bridge on the evening of August 28~(th). Ultimately, the project team designed and constructed the new bridge, working around the clock, in 8 days.
