This study developed a fracture design process for a new break-away bolt for 4” safety break-away coupling (SBC). To design the new bolt, we analyzed stress profiles of commercial break-away bolts for 3” SBC under elastic loading conditions by means of finite element analysis (FEA). We benchmarked their elastic stress profile and ratio between input and resulted maximum values. Since we have a limitation to investigate the bolt fracture, we derived a fracture design factor (FDF) from benchmarked bolts to compensate the fracture range design by using the elastic analysis. We designed a new break-away bolt for 4”SBC with FDF and made a test specimen and evaluated it by means of FEA and experiment. The experimentally evaluated facture result of the new bolt was exceed about 17% over the commercial 4” SBC break-away specification.
