This paper highlights several cases where alkaline-carbonate stress corrosion cracking (ACSCC) occurred in atypical locations, including a cold wall Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) Unit regenerator, sour water stripper (SWS) pumparound piping, SWS ammonia acid gas knockout piping, and a mercaptan oxidation unit. These unusual failure locations highlight the need for a fundamental understanding of the ACSCC mechanism. This paper discusses work done to monitor on-going ACSCC risks through sour water sampling, chemical analysis, and ionic modeling.
