Development of Mold Inductor for Power Conversion System

As global warming has become an international environmental problem recently, regulations on carbon emissions are being strengthened by each country. Leading automakers are focusing on developing lightweight and highly efficient automotive components in order to provide competitive eco-friendly cars. It is essential for green cars to have a power conversion system to utilize the electric energy from the battery as a power source. An inductor is a component in the power conversion system, which stores and transfers electrical energy and is composed of a magnetic core and electrical wires. While soft magnetic ferrite is a common material for a magnetic core, research on soft magnetic metallic alloy powders are required to make inductors smaller and lighter. In this letter, we present the research of the inductor in a 48/12 V converter for 48 V mild hybrid vehicles. A mold inductor, which embeds electrical wires inside of the inductor filled with metallic alloy magnetic powder combined with epoxy, has been developed and its properties were compared to the soft magnetic ferrite inductor.
