Cooling towers are key equipment that remove process heat and cool the working fluid in industry. When cooling is a result of water evaporation, the volume of water lost is substantial. In a scenario of reduced supply of water to industry, reuse of non-potable water from wastewater has been used as a make-up in cooling towers. This paper discusses the main problems and risks associated with the application of water reuse in an oil refinery comparing cases of residual water mapping in a fertilizer industry. A methodology for water reuse is presented in a refining unit, with some discussions about system characteristics, limitations and challenges in the application of techniques. The initial approach after preliminary map that indicate probable sources of residual water and contaminant charge is the principal result of this paper. Next step of research is the validation of preliminary results and validation with new map and pinch modeling with associated risk assessment to corrosion events.
