This paper explores the current state of the art in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)/lnstrumentation for evaluating the structural behavior of structures including cooling towers. The process of project planning, sensor selection, and data collection to capture specific behaviors is addressed in the paper. Sensor technologies including inclinometers, accelerometers, and strain gages are described briefly. Description of some SHM projects is provided on various structures with commentary on applicability to cooling towers to economically solve design and maintenance challenges.
