In 2016, the International Code Council (ICC) convened an Ad Hoc Committee on Tall Wood Buildings to explore the building science of tall wood buildings and develop relevant code changes. Matt Timmers was nominated by the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) to be a member of this committee. After half a dozen in-person meetings and countless working group calls, the committee submitted, in January of 2018, a major set of proposals into the Group A IBC 2021 development process. This first set includes new construction types, construction requirements and increased building size allowances. All of the Group A proposals, with a few floor modifications, were recommended for approval at the ICC Committee Action Hearings in April of 2018. The proposals include three new construction types: Type Ⅳ-A, Ⅳ-B and Ⅳ-C, constructed of mass timber or noncombustible materials. These new types are based on the existing Heavy Timber construction type (renamed Type Ⅳ-HT) but with additional fire-resistance ratings and levels of required noncombustible protection. The proposals have provisions for up to 18 stories of Type IV-A construction for Business and Residential Occupancies. This paper and corresponding presentation will summarize the technical research that supported the committee work, the resulting changes implemented in specific product standards to support the proposals, and the proposals and status. In the interim, these published proposals are being used as a basis of an alternative means justification of proposed tall mass timber and hybrid buildings.
