Currently under construction, 2,682-bed Ikitelli City Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey will be world's largest seismically isolated building. 1,000,000 m2 project consists of three 15 to 18 story towers and six clinic buildings sitting on a 5-story common podium structure. The hospital located in a highly-seismic region is designed to satisfy ASCE 41 "Immediate Occupancy" seismic performance objective under a very rare earthquake event. To achieve this performance objective, reinforced concrete structure is supported by 2,068 triple-friction-pendulum (TFP) isolators. Three different type of isolators were considered and analyzed before the isolator type was finalized. This enabled the client to select the most cost and schedule friendly option. To design the building, engineering team developed and utilized cloud based structural analysis and data processing procedures. These procedures enabled the team to (ⅰ) automate structural optimization processes, (ⅱ) perform nonlinear time history analysis of multiple structural schemes by going beyond computational limits and (ⅲ) process and analyze terabytes of data generated for the design of the lateral system. Digital tools not only made the analyses of the massive structure possible but also significantly improved the efficiency of the design process. Implementing cloud based design processes enabled Arup team to analyze, design and optimize the 1,000,000 m~2 hospital. The presentation focuses on these processes and discusses areas for further improvement.
