Addressing the Need for Seismic Retrofit of Reinforced Concrete Wall Elements with Advanced Composites

As the need for seismic retrofit in Southern California increases due to seismic ordinances, some building owners are faced with the requirement to conduct seismic retrofit or to demolish a building structure. A seismic deficiency that is often present on non-ductile reinforced concrete buildings is the lack of sufficient capacity of wall in-plane shear, in-plane flexure and out-of-plane flexural strength. Our company has recently supported the structural engineering community with a method of using advanced composites to address these wall issues that is low impact, cost effective and a relatively fast retrofit alternative. This paper will focus on the FRP design basis, application and detailing - including composite anchor detailing - for wall strengthening. The paper will present test results showing the performance of advanced composites for reinforced concrete wall strengthening; it will also present case studies of its application in the field.
