Investigation results of capabilities of the Mandelstam - Brillouin backscatter in optical fibers of various types by using Brillouin traces are presented in this work. The Brillouin traces for optical fibers with heated and cooled segments are given. The changes in the capabilities of the optical fibers under test are evaluated.Optical fibers of various manufacturers with similar optical capabilities have a different shape of the Mandelstam - Brillouin backscattering spectrum. The database of these spectrum profiles of optical fibers of different kinds and manufacturers enables the optical fibers to be classified, as well as the “problem” segments to be identified.
