The groundwater in CKDu-endemic region can be commonly characterized by Ca-Mg-HCO_3 predominant geochemistry,and elevated concentrations(>MAL)of alkalinity,hardness,TDS,magnesium and microbiological parameters.Elevated occurrence of magnesium-predominant hardness and ionicity in groundwater showed significant relations with the incidence of CKDu.The RO plants showed satisfactory performance in removing excessive chemical constituents in groundwater,but enhancement of mineral contents in product water and stringent disinfection would be crucial to safeguard the public health.The CBOs may require further assistance of the water supply authorities regarding chemical cleaning,technical training for RO plant operators,water quality monitoring and capacity building of communities.Meanwhile the government needs to regulate the differenttypes of RO-treated water vendors in the CKDu region with regards to instigation and O&M of these businesses to safeguard the environment and the consumer-health.This study revealed that small-scale RO plants would hardly be a sustainable water treatment solution for the CKDu region,but they have appreciably addressed the pressing water crisis faced by the rural communities living in these areas;thus,they should be regulated,empowered and promoted until centralized schemes are introduced in future.
