Kannur International Airport is a green field airport project with airside development on a hilly terrain plateau. The airside infrastructure development works involved earthworks of 45.5 million cum in cutting and filling. To accommodate the desired runway length and runway end safety area (RESA), the plateau was extended along the runway centreline, beyond the plateau, and therefore requiring a high embankment filling with height ranging from 66 m to 87 m. Since the available land was insufficient to accommodate the construction of embankment with a free slope; a reinforced soil slope (RSS), with maximum slope of 65 degrees, was designed and constructed. An RSS of this magnitude in the runway alignment for an airport is a unique feature of this project, located in high rainfall area. The geometry of the RSS itself was challenging being asymmetrical with curves and bends. The airport operational perimeter (AOP) road is positioned at approximately mid height of the high embankment. The slope was reinforced with high strength uniaxial geogrids and the complete system was designed using finite element analysis. Slip circle failure and wedge failure cases were considered in both static and seismic analysis for local and global failure cases. Considering the high annual rainfall received at the airport site, an elaborate drainage system was also designed for the RSS embankment. The paper presents a case study detailing the concept to design development of the high RSS system constructed for providing the planned runway length and RESA.
